A new announcement on the availability of batteries by Ikea could make solar electricity more attractive to potential customers, potentially reducing electricity bills by hundreds of pounds.

Ikea, in partnership with UK panel provider Solar Century, has said that it will start selling batteries for rooftop solar panels as part of a new solar system.

Storage technologies have been typically expensive in the past, a key obstacle to wider adoption of solar power. However, the new product represents a significant step forward for the economics, potentially saving a household up to £560 per year on its electricity bills.

An up-front cost of £6,925 for the panels and battery kit still represents a significant investment, but Ikea and Solar Century estimate that customers will now be able to make their money back in 12 years.

While this news doesn’t usher an advent of solar power, it highlights continued momentum towards renewables as an increasingly critical part of the overall energy picture, and the potential for it to be the primary source of electricity in the future.
